Celia Brougham
Celia started her career working in retail banking. She quickly learnt the importance of a strong union when it comes to safety at work, when she was involved in an armed hold up at the bank. Shortly after this experience, Celia became the Workplace Representative and was then recruited as an Organiser for the Finance Sector Union. Celia developed an appreciation for the need to build trust with members who are in an ‘anti-union’ environment by achieving outcomes that do not require members to ‘do the doing’.
Celia joined the South Australian Public Sector over five years ago and has most recently worked in the Attorney General’s Department and the South Australian Ambulance Service. Celia has a deep understanding of the issues that impact public sector employees. Celia prides herself on the knowledge she has of many South Australian Public Sector Agencies and her ability to build rapport and meaningful relationships quickly.
Bringing members together and establishing trust in our union is critical. As Assistant General Secretary, Celia will ensure our union is accountable and open to members with union sub-committees tailored to different professions – with the General Secretary and Assistant General Secretary as regular attendees at worksites – and members will always be present at meetings with executive, not left wondering what happened behind closed doors.
Celia has sound technical knowledge to support Charlotte Watson as General Secretary. Celia will work hard with Charlotte to ensure, in particular, that members matters are skillfully researched, campaigns are executed with transparent decision-making and that the PSA has a dedicated team of safety experts.
Celia passionately stands for a union that is there for its members. No more poor wage outcomes and declining membership numbers – that will stay front and centre with Celia as Assistant General Secretary.
